This week, physical science and chemistry students tested their math skills. Math is a tool often used by scientists to gather data, establish algorithms that describe the natural world, and express data in simpler terms. Students in both classes practiced skills such as multiplying and dividing in scientific notation and converting between the American and metric systems.
To sweeten a sometimes difficult topic, students had the opportunity to convert an American recipe for bath bombs into metric terms. Students then followed the recipe to make their own bath bombs. Results were mixed; some groups created perfect bath bombs while others ended up with large foamy messes. Despite a few failures, students still had a blast! Chemistry students will finish up their math unit in the coming week and take their first unit test while physical science students will discuss the scientific method and the energy contained in matter.
